Paloma Faith

Thought Paloma at London Fashion Week would make a cheerfully festive subject today.

Merry Christmas y'all.

Omar Zingaro Bhatia

Always a pleasure to get a visit from my friend Omar but the second I clocked 'the briefcase' I knew that on this occasion, it was strictly business. (As opposed to the 'attache case' which tends to indicate slightly more relaxed activities, like clubbing.)

Sure enough he'd been dashing around town hand delivering all his artworks to their respective new owners. If you do buy an Omar Zingaro Bhatia painting and happen to live in Glasgow, remember to request his OZB hand delivery service. There's no extra charge but beware, there may be a cost, woke up with a vague memory of agreeing to hear a travelling band of Romanian Gypsies play in the new year. Sounds fun, probably more an 'attache case' kind of night.

Thank y'omar.

Recoat Christmas Sale : The Results

Just picked up my purchases from this year's Recoat Gallery Christmas Sale. The first painting I fell for (above) is by Matt Mignanelli. Am optimistically hoping that it and a Todd James (REAS) silkscreen I bought a few years back will try to make friends...

"Bullies" by REAS

Russell Dempster "Letter Bomb 03"

Love how graphic this piece is, now have to figure out how best to frame it.

Found this image on Russell's tumblr blog, happy days!

Recoat Gallery is open tomorrow Wed 22nd and Thurs 23rd from 12 - 6pm then closes for the holidays but all the works are for sale online here.

More Guerilla Lamppost Warmers...

This was what The Halt Bar's lamppost was sporting back in September.

Looks like a whole new colourway for winter.

Charing Cross last week.

Genuinely have no idea who's behind these but they're very sweet.

"VERY MACHINE-A..."

The man behind the machine, owner of MACHINE-A, Stavros Karelis, who had just told me "It's not Fashion Week until I've seen you Marina".
Awe, the feeling's completely mutual Stavros (yes this is a total love-in and I'm making no apologies!). He then confides that something really exciting's being planned for the business... but more of that later.

It's only two years ago that MACHINE-A (Digitaria) popped up, totally left-of-centre, in an old tailor's shop in Soho and quickly blindsided everyone with its conceptual, imaginatively curated yet utterly intelligent fashion. Even Lady G's now a fan.

Designer clothing should look unlike anything else, forget 'pretty', it should be relevant and meaningful and thought provoking and challenging... Think that's why I have such a soft spot for MACHINE-A, both the shop and the extended collective of emerging talent. Can't articulate precisely why but this shop gives me a flutter of excitement in the pit of my stomach.

Like everyone else, I'm still struggling to 'label' the brand's unique sense of editorship - this pleases me greatly because that's the point.
"Oooh, very MACHINE-A" was the best I can do. Coincidentally and completely independently, lovely Michael at Anastasia and Duck blog recently used that very same expression!

I'll eat my Lina Osterman studded collar if this isn't a Charlie Le Mindu haircut. The hair architect does a regular pop-up salon in the MACHINE-A shop.
What other independent boutique has a shop front like this? Piers Atkinson for MACHINE-A starring Aaron Frew.

Can now reveal that secret... As of today, MACHINE-A also have an ONLINE shop!!! Styled by the inspirational Anna Travelyan, click the image below to see the site.

Red Currant Vodka

I don't cope very well with holidays "in the country" and inevitably start 'making things' - the very pursuit I'm supposed to be escaping!

Had been eyeing up these plump red currants for a day or two before eventually swooping in with my scissors.

Red currant vodka:
Fill large glass bottles or jars with the red currants to almost half way up, then top up nearly to the top with vodka. Went with Russian Standard simply because it was on offer. How much sugar to add is a bit of a black art but try at least 100 grams to start, you can always add more 'to taste' after a few weeks.

After 5 or 6 weeks, once all sugar has dissolved and you're happy with the taste, pour the liquor into a jug. Through a sieve is the easiest way to catch all the fruit.
Now funnel the red currant vodka into a clean decanter or bottle. Decanting through a coffee filter paper takes a bit longer but gives a wonderfully clear finish.

The colour's faded a little over the months from Turkish delight to a delicate coral pink hue but it tastes lovely, pleasantly medicinal with a hint of pomegranate.
This is my absolute favourite little glass, it has stylised bubbles cut into the sides which makes me think it's 60s. Its partner went the way of my best teacup and succumbed to the Belfast Sink.

'Hattie' is what's occurring...

Last Sunday, Jacqueline (she's in Bafta daaahling!) invited me to the preview screening of 'Hattie', a new BBC TV biopic of the Carry-On actress Hattie Jacques.
Coincidentally, Jacqueline's been playing "Matron" herself recently after her partner came off his bike, ouch - get well soon Leo!

I make it to the GFT cinema just as the opening credits are rolling. My eyes have now gone from snow blindness to just plain blind. After a brief kerfuffle and some unintentional groping (from me), my 'suggested' seat becomes illuminated by torchlight. Have no idea where Jacqueline is seated.

My snow drenched fedora isn't the only thing starting to get steamy. As the film gets underway, we're quickly introduced to Gavin and Stacey actress Ruth Jones as Hattie Jacques and Aiden Turner as her vigorous young lover, John Schofield.

It's an intriguing story, all shot in and around Glasgow by Angel Eye Media

After the screening, we're invited across the road to the Blythswood Square Hotel for drinks and nibbles.

Felt slightly awkward approaching Aiden Turner for a picture given I'd spent a large part of the past hour watching him making love.

BBC4's 'Hattie' will be coming soon...
